Studio Policies
Please review the following. All ceramic members must adhere to these studio protocols.
-
This is a community studio – please be aware that you affect everyone around you!
All members must attend a brief orientation before using the ceramics studio. Please contact the Ceramics Manager, Nerea Nicholson (nereanicholsons@gmail.com) to schedule an appointment.
All members must read the Studio Andreas ceramics membership and studio policies and sign a Waiver of Liability.
All members and guests must follow and comply with all rules and regulations of Studio Andreas as well as any instructions of Studio Andreas instructors, owners, administrators and employees.
NO SMOKING. No smoking is permitted on Studio Andreas’ premises nor in or near the building.
Members are responsible for their guests and any damage they or their guests cause.
The ceramics studio might be closed for limited periods of time due to equipment and studio maintenance, emergencies, or rare occasions; at least twenty-four-hour notice of such studio closings will be provided when possible.
Please remember that Studio Andreas ceramics studio is a communal space. Your fellow members and Studio Andreas students deserve a clean work environment. We kindly request that you clean up after yourself and guests. Always review the clean-up checklist before you leave the studio.
DO NOT discard clay down sink drains.
If members do not follow cleaning protocols and receive three complaints, we may cancel their membership.
We request that all members complete one studio task of their choosing per month in coordination with the Ceramics Manager. Some examples of studio tasks might include wedging clay and mixing glazes, among others.
Any accidents in the studio will be documented by incident reports. After three incidents, members will be required to repeat the orientation.
Please be sure that the studio is securely locked when you leave the studio and no other individuals are present.
Studio Andreas is a welcoming and diverse community; and we aim to foster an inclusive, understanding and inspiring environment. We ask that all members respect personal boundaries. Members are expected to communicate calmly and constructively. Please refrain from yelling or raising your voice in any discussions. Bullying and harassment of any kind, whether verbal, physical, or emotional, is strictly prohibited. Members must help us to maintain a safe and supportive environment where everyone can engage and create without fear or intimidation.

Studio Andreas is a mid-fire studio. Studio Andreas is not a production pottery studio nor does it allow slip casting.
The firing fee is $1 per one pound of clay, except anything ten inches and over is $1.50 per pound. Firing fees are waived if the member is enrolled in a ceramics class. To determine the cost of firing, each piece will be weighed after glazing and then again before the second firing.
Studio Andreas will only fire work that members create at Studio Andreas. Studio Andreas will not fire any work made by nonmembers or not made at Studio Andreas.
As an important measure to protect the integrity of the kiln, members may only use the clay and glazes provided by Studio Andreas. Different types of clay or glazes may only be used if the Ceramics Manager tests and approves them.
We recommend members make their own cookies to best protect their work in the firing process. Underglazes are not included in membership (they are reserved for youth classes and occasional workshops).
Studio Andreas and the Ceramics Manager have the ultimate discretion concerning firing work. If Studio Andreas deems a member’s work too flawed to fire, such that it might cause damage to the kiln or another’s work (i.e. excessive, thick or flaking glaze), Studio Andreas reserves the right not to fire it. In such cases, the work will be placed on the “Oops” shelf.
-
An initial three-month commitment is required for all memberships. After expiration of the initial three-month period, members may cancel at any time at the end of each monthly cycle. Please provide notice of cancellation at least two weeks prior to the end of the respective monthly cycle.
Membership fees are automatically withdrawn from credit or debit card accounts on a monthly basis. Failure to pay membership fees will result in the immediate termination of membership and all associated privileges.
Space is limited; all memberships depend on availability. Thus, members are not permitted to freeze their memberships. If a member cancels their membership, Studio Andreas cannot guarantee that such membership will be available in the future because any openings will be offered to the artists on the waitlist.
Membership fees and what is included in memberships may be subject to change upon sixty-day advance notice.
-
No guests without permission are permitted in the studio at any time.
Unlimited members receive one free guest pass per month, which means the free monthly guest pass opportunity applies to a single guest for one day per month and expires each month (a member may not carry over free guest passes to following months).
All members may purchase additional guest passes at $60 per guest per day. Each member must remain with their guest(s) at all times while on the premises.
-
Tools are provided with the exception of bats and lids, which are reserved for students.
Please use tools and equipment carefully and gently. Students who damage Studio Andreas’ equipment such as our kiln or kiln shelves are liable for the cost of repairs or replacement, depending on the damage.
STORAGE OF CLAY, MATERIALS, AND WORK
No member shall store or mix dry materials or powders in the studio.
Work may not be stored or left out on tables, nor stored on shelves that do not belong to the respective member.
-
DAMAGED WORK
While Studio Andreas makes every effort to handle student work with the utmost care, we cannot guarantee perfect results. Members’ work might crack or break during the firing or glazing process and glazes can have unpredictable results. If a member damages another artist’s work, they should write a note and inform the Ceramics Manager.
-
Only students enrolled in classes may receive instruction and assistance from ceramics instructors and only during class.
Members may direct their questions to the Ceramics Manager (ceramics@studioandreas.com) or Studio Andreas Administration (admin12studioandreas.com ). Owner, Mark Andreas may be reached at 203-521-9183.
