Ceramics at Studio Andreas

Discover the art of clay in our Ceramics Studio! Our instructors will guide you through the techniques of hand-building and wheel throwing. All tools, materials, and kiln firings included. Classes are open to both beginners and experienced potters looking to refine their skills.

Ceramic Class Offerings

  • 5-Week Monday Evenings: Intermediate Wheel Throwing with Nerea Nicholson

    Mondays 6:30 - 9:30PM, November 9th-December 14th (No class on Nov 16th)

    Take your skills to another level. In this course you will be receiving personalized instruction to perfect your craft. Perfect for those with experience who want to level up and be challenged. Class meets once a week for 3 hours, with up to 10 students per class.

  • 3-Week Intermediate Hand-Building Class w/ Maria

    Tuesdays 6:30-9:30 PM, November 3rd-November 17th


    For students looking to level-up their clay hand-building skills! Each day of class will focus on a project, designed to address three hand-building techniques: slabs, pinching, and coiling. Special emphasis will be given to improving the structural quality of clay work, refining surfaces, and sharing any tips for building your personal projects. Some prior hand-building experience is required.

  • 6-Week Intro to Wheel Throwing w/ Nerea

    Wednesdays 9:30AM - 12:30PM, November 4th-December 16th (No Class on November 25th)

    This 6-week course introduces the fundamentals of wheel throwing, including wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing. Designed for both beginners and those with prior pottery experience, the course follows a project-based format that leaves plenty of room for personal creativity. By the end, you’ll take home your own finished pieces along with a solid set of new skills. All clay and tools are provided.

    6-Week Youth Ceramics Class w/ Nerea

    Wednesdays 4PM-6PM, November 4th-December 18th (No class on 11/25)

    Over the course of 6 classes, this class offers young artists the opportunity to explore their creativity while experiencing the messy fun of clay. Through open-ended clay play, students will learn the fundamentals of working with clay, including coil building, pinching, slab techniques, and an introduction to wheel throwing. They’ll also explore glazing and surface design to bring their pieces to life.

    3- Week Intro to the Wheel w/ Nerea

    Wednesday Evenings, 6:30PM-9:30PM, November 4th-18th

    Over the course of three weeks, you'll be introduced to the fundamental techniques of wheel throwing, including wedging, centering, throwing, and trimming. We will culminate with glazing. Designed for beginners as well as those with previous pottery experience. This course is a project-based format with some room for personal touches. By the end of the course you will have a minimum of 4 finished pieces and lots of new skills.

    *During this three week course, students will not be able to make up any class that is missed.

  • 6-Week Thursday Mornings: Intro to Wheel w/ Owen

    Thursday Mornings, 9:30AM-12:30PM, November 5th-December 15th (No Class on November 26th)

    This 6-week course introduces the fundamentals of wheel throwing, including wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing. Designed for both beginners and those with prior pottery experience, the course follows a project-based format that leaves plenty of room for personal creativity. By the end, you’ll take home your own finished pieces along with a solid set of new skills. All clay and tools are provided

Designed for both beginners and those with prior pottery experience, the course follows a project-based format that leaves plenty of room for personal creativity.   • 2 Day Class Saturday Mornings: Intro to Ceramics w/ Nerea

    Saturdays 9:30 - 12:30PM, November 7th and November 21st

    Learn the fundamentals of working with clay. Starting off with hand-building, we will explore techniques such as pinching, coil construction, slab rolling and glazing. Then we move onto wheel throwing, learning techniques such as wedging, centering and trimming. Perfect for beginners and those with experience. Class meets once a week for 3 hours.

    2 Day Saturday Afternoon: Holiday Gift Making w/ Nerea

    Saturdays 12:30PM-3:30PM, November 7th & 21


    Holiday season is around the corner if you are looking for a unique gift, or just want to get together with some friends and try something new, this is the perfect class for you. There is no better gift than something thoughtful, unique, and meaningful made by YOU! Ditch the mass-produced items, add a personal touch with your own two hands. In this 3 week class, you will make 5-6 items, personalize them, glaze them, all to be ready for pickup before the holidays.

Our Studio Space

In our ceramic studio, we have 15 wheels accommodating both our ceramic students but also our members. In addition our studio has: a designated glazing space, custom shelving for both students and members, a variety of glazes, clay bodies, and clay tools, a fully working kitchen and a lounge loft that looks over the entire studio! Lastly, our studio is equipped with an amazing and ever-growing ceramic community.

FAQs

What is the difference between hand-building and wheel-throwing?

Hand-building is when people exclusively uses their hands and tools free from the throwing wheel to create vessels, sculptures, and more! Wheel-throwing is when people use the wheel machine to shape clay forms using the continuous spinning force to create symmetrical forms.

Are your ceramic classes divided based on skill level?

At our ceramic studio, we believe in mixed level classrooms, giving each student the chance to learn independently and collaboratively. While we offer a Monday Intermediate Ceramics Class, all other classes are open to all skill levels!

I can’t commit to a full 7 week semester, what should I do instead?

In addition to our 7-week semester classes, we also offer 4-week classes for those who can’t commit! Plus we offer new and rotating one day workshops every month! Workshops are the perfect introduction to the medium and to step foot into our studio. Additionally, we offer private lessons that range from 2 hours to 4 hours with one-on-one instruction with our faculty. Lastly, if you are an experienced and independent ceramicist, we do offer memberships on a rolling basis.

What if I miss a class? Can I make it up?

During a 4-week ceramics course, unfortunately, students are not allowed to make up any class that is missed due to the strict firing schedule planned for 4-week classes. During this 7-week course, students are allowed to have 1 class makeup. This makeup class can be done during any other ceramic class being offered. If you plan on missing a class, please contact your instructor immediately and discuss how you will be making up that class.

Do I need to bring supplies to class?

All materials and firing fees are included in the total cost of your semester class. Clay can be messy so wearing clothes you are comfortable with getting dirty is best! Students are encouraged but not required to bring an apron or a towel!

I took a one time workshop at Studio Andreas, when can I pick up my work?

We ask all students to please wait at least 3 weeks before directly contacting ceramics@studioandreas.com to inquire about your piece. We will always contact you directly once your piece is ready for pickup. If you do not collect your piece after 2 months, Studio Andreas unfortunately has to throw away or donate all work left behind.

    Nerea Nicholsons

    STUDIO MANAGER & INSTRUCTOR Nerea is a ceramicist and macramé artist from Guanajuato, Mexico. Barro (clay) reminds her of home and keeps her grounded and connected to the earth. She enjoys sharing this passion with others, continually exploring its possibilities both on the wheel and by hand. Macramé, an ancient technique taught to her by her brother over a decade ago, allows her to slow down and embrace the rhythm of making. Both clay and string hold generous creative power—materials she approaches with deep gratitude.

    Maria Spiess

    CERAMIC INSTRUCTOR

    Maria is a ceramic artist and instructor based in Westchester, New York. She builds her work using coils and pinching techniques, relying on her hands and minimal tools to shape each piece. This simplicity allows her to capture the natural marks of making—fingerprints that record the dialogue between artist and clay. Maria views her work as a reflection of human connection, where every interaction, like a breeze over water, leaves a lasting impression.

    Owen Clay Hughes

    CERAMIC SHOP TECH & INSTRUCTOR
    Owen is from Westchester, NY and has been working with clay as long as he can remember. Having artistic parents, one being a potter, he learned pottery wheel skills very early on. He has taught pottery to kids and adults of all ages. Owen graduated from SUNY Purchase in 2025 with a Bachelor of Music Degree.
